No sign of the sick, the powerless and helpless still struggling to go free. -

There is no sign in Westerbork
Of the wretched thousands in transit to torture and extermination
No sign of barracks, watchtowers or barbed wire
No sign of the imminent selection, the shocking fear of further transportation.

Doomed people - men, women and children -
Hunted, beaten - sensing the end -
Desperately backing away from the brink,
The German border - o God, not to be sent!

How many days of respite, how many weeks?
Then the last hearttearing sobs, the outstretched hands
The last glimpse before the doors slam shut
To carry the Nazi victims to blooddrenched lands.
